RGS/RWI Short Course "Research Data Management: General Workflow and Version Control"

The course introduces you to the broad field of research data management and the documentation and version control tool Git, to ensure the reproducibility of your research.

The mini lecture focuses on good coding practices, version control, and documentation using Git/GitHub, providing a brief overview of the relevance and requirements of research data management.

It is recommended to bring your own laptop for the mini-lecture. To prepare for the course, install Git on your laptop and register yourself on GitHub.

Three-day mini-lecture: May 17 - 19, 2023

• Day 1: a lecture on the general use of spatial econometrics and examples (1 hour); concrete use of GIS with small exercises (4 hours); reading group on a spatial econometrics topic (1 hour);

• Day 2: a lecture on more involved spatial econometrics/use of spatial data and examples (1 hour); concrete use of GIS with two problems (4 hours); reading group on a spatial econometrics topic (1 hour);

• Day 3: a lecture on innovative data approaches with a highlight on spatial data (1 hour); use of Python in GIS and introduction to Google Earth Engine (4 hours); reading group on a spatial econometrics topic (1 hour).

Mini-Lecture "The Economics of Health Care"

This course provides an introduction to theoretical models and empirical applications in health economics. Topics include the provision and design of health insurance, causes and consequences of provider behavior, and competition in health care markets. There will also be a module on Pollution and Health.

As all RGS Mini-Lectures, the course is designed for students who have taken a first-year PhD sequence in Economics. Students taking the course for credit will be asked to give a 30-minute, in-class presentation on one paper (papers and presentation dates to be assigned before the first class based on registration).

This assesment is likely to be multiple choice exam due a few days after the end of the course. Details will be conveyed to registrants. The course will cover -based also on participants' interests and prior knowledge:

  • a selection of methods from: Regression basics (mandatory); Panel data, fixed effects; Difference-in-Difference; Instrumental variables; Randomized control trials; Regression discontinuity; Why FE, DiD, IV, RCT, and RD are all the same; Mortality and fertility measures; Happiness measures.
  • a selection of topics from: Models of health production; Fetal origins; Wealth-health relationship; Pollution; The health impacts of health insurance; Mental health; Mortality inequality; Fertility; Happiness.
